Eat your way across the city

Portugal is known for its gastronomy and excelente wines, and no trip to Lisbon is complete without sampling the local cuisine. Checkout our restaurant guide for recommendations of some of our favourite spots to eat.

A CEVICHERIA

A giant octopus (made of sponge) hanging from the ceiling draws the attention of passers-by on the street, and it´s an indication of what´s served inside – ceviche. This small-great Peruvian restaurant is one of the best tables in Lisbon. It honors the national dish of Peru with salmon, tuna and cod, but also has causas and quinotos in recipes that vary throughout time. Must try the pure ceviche, with seasonal white fish, mashed sweet potatos, onions, seaweed and tiger´s milk.

CANTINHO DO AVILLEZ

Cantinho do Avillez is owned by José Avillez, one of Portugal´s most famous Michellin-starred chefs. This is his smaller, simpler bistrô which fills up quickly during lunchtime. However, when evening falls, a more intimate atmosphere prevails. The cuisine, though mostly Portuguese – inspired, is influenced by travels abroad with likes of lamb tagine, steak tartare with New York potatoes, and suckling pig on the menu.

CERVEJARIA RAMIRO

Cervejaria Ramiro is a seafood restaurant that will serve you one of the best seafood meals. Originally opened in 1956, it is run like a well-oiled machine, with waiters running around holding giant platters of seafood aloft. Inside of the restaurant it´s loud with friendly conversation and you´ll see some water tunks full of live lobsters, plus a variety of some of the finest seafood. It´s THE place to eat seafood. There are better places for sure, but few are as authentic as this one. The seafood is fantastic and always fresh. Those who are still hungry can end their meal with a “prego” – a Portuguese steak sandwich, a simple cut of beef with a little mustard slapped on a dense roll.

O TALHO

If you´re fond of meat, be sure to visit “O Talho” (“The Butcher”), one of Chef Kiko´s restaurants, which aims to enhance the flavor of meat that the Portuguese people love so much. The space is elegante, well decorated and inviting and the meal blends perfectly with existing atmosphere. The modern and innovative dishes have the tastiest mear as their protagonista and the accompaniments take it to whole new, unique and delicious level. And it could only be this way in a restaurant that honors the best ingredientes, are we right?

OS GAZETEIROS

The Gazeteiros is a taverna-style and natural wine bar, laid – back 20 – seat restaurant situated in the old bairro of Alfama – the historic center of Lisbon,  started by the French musician, David Eyguesier, who decided to become a chef. The menu changes daily, depending on what is available and fresh. There´s no à La carte options, only a set menu. Thus, we cannot recommend anything specific, but the kitchen made one of the very few matcha-based desserts certainly you will enjoy. The “freestyle” dishes here are inspired by whatever David halls from the local Market that morning.

TIME OUT MERCADO DA RIBEIRA

Lisbon´s Mercado da Ribeira has been a landmark since the 1890´s when the market´s doors first opened, but it was never as trendy as it is today. Time Out Lisbon took it over a few years ago and gastronomic shopping destination, it has been a huge success, bringing together some of the city´s best chefs, restaurants and brands under one roof with stalls, stores and new restaurant concepts. If you´re got a taste for something in particular, chances are you´ll find it there!
